Helium is typically used to fill the 1200 gram latex balloon. A tarp is place underneath for protection. Care is taken not to touch the balloon too much.

Once the ozonesonde sensor is interfaced with the radiosondes, the telemetry program kicks-in pre-launch conditions are measured. The sonde package is taken outside and given time to adjust to ambient background values.
The sonde package is secured to the payout-reel which is attached to the parachute which, finally, is knotted to the ballooon. Nothing but string hold it all together.

At Reunion, the balloons are filled at the fire station located on the airport grounds. On this day, they are using the fire truck as shelter from very windy conditions.
A successful launch where the resulting data joins the SHADOZ archive.
The End.
